OVERVIEW

The Emergency Medicine Course (EMC) aims to introduce participants to the specialty of emergency medicine. The course is written and delivered by Emergency Medicine Specialists and offers an insight into the challenging and exciting world of emergency care.


The course will provide a solid foundation on which to build your knowledge and experience. The EMC aims to improve your confidence and will explore the systems and management of patients commonly presenting to an emergency care setting.


Participants also have the opportunity to attend an optional in-person workshop at The Alfred. This one-day workshop will focus on practical skills sessions, hands on learning and provides an excellent opportunity to network with and learn from our expert faculty.

  • Regional or Rural Emergency Departments without vocational training programs may wish to provide this course to their longer-term locum junior staff.

Faculty

Dr David McCreary

Dr David McCreary is an Emergency Physician at the Alfred Hospital and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University. He completed his undergraduate training in the UK at the University of Liverpool and completed his MSc in Trauma Science from Queen Mary’s University, London. David trained in Emergency Medicine in a variety of centres in UK and Australia and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.

Dr Binula Wickramarachchi

Dr Binula Wickramarachchi is an Emergency Physician at the Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre and an Adjunct Lecturer at Monash University. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Auckland in 2011, prior to making the move across the Tasman for his emergency specialist training. His clinical experience includes emergency, critical care and retrieval medicine in various sites across Melbourne and Darwin.

Dr Laura Scott

Dr Laura Scott is an Emergency and Trauma Physician at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and Senior Lecturer at Monash University. Laura graduated from the University of Dundee in 2010 and on completing her Foundation Training in Glasgow, she moved to sunnier climes in 2012 to Fremantle, Western Australia. Here she chose to pursue her career in Emergency Medicine before joining The Alfred in 2016. Since then she has developed her passions for Quality Improvement within the Emergency Department, Education, Mentoring and Wellbeing, Geriatric EM and Trauma Medicine. She’s worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital and completed her Emergency Medicine training as a Fellow with the Alfred Trauma Service.

Dr Tori Perry

Dr Tori Perry is a General Paediatrician and Paediatric Emergency advanced trainee. She has trained in tertiary, rural and remote parts of Australia and in London. Within Paediatric Emergency her interests are trauma, adolescent medicine, mental health, indigenous medicine and advocating for vulnerable kids such as those requiring help with forensics or child protection. Her non clinical interests include medical ethics and teaching. She is interested in improving healthcare worker wellbeing and as part of this facilitates Schwartz Rounds at the Royal Children’s Hospital. She is currently doing adult Emergency Medicine training at The Alfred Hospital and is working on research into paediatric burns.
