OVERVIEW:

Taught by Emergency Physicians and Clinical Sonographer, The Ultrasound ADVANCED Course enhances your skills for confident and effective ultrasound application. Elevate your practice with experienced faculty guidance.


Topics covered in this module include assessing for a pericardial effusion and tamponade, basic assessment of the LV and RV function, assessing fluid status in the unwell patient and developing your skills in lung ultrasound to assess for pneumothorax, pneumonia, cardiac failure and effusions.


The course includes two pre-course quizzes and pre-reading.

Dr Elissa Kennedy-Smith

Dr. Elissa Kennedy-Smith is an Emergency Physician who works at Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department and The Royal Women’s Hospital in their Early Pregnancy Assessment Service, and is an Affiliate at Monash University. Elissa has an avid interest in all Emergency applications of Point of Care Ultrasound, completing her CCPU in AAA, E-FAST and 1st trimester in 2012, and then going on to attain her Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (Emergency) in October 2017. She enjoys teaching, especially Focused Ultrasound in the ED, has been an instructor on many courses, and is currently the Ultrasound Lead for Emergency Medicine at Alfred Health, as well as being a Committee member for EMUGs Victoria.

Oriana Tolo

Oriana began her ultrasound career at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1994 where she began developing her teaching skills by teaching the radiology registrars paediatric ultrasound. She moved into general ultrasound in private practice in 1998 at Mayne Health before joining Victoria House Medical Imaging in 2001. From 2001 until 2004 she continued to work at the RCH as tutor sonographer while specialising in MSK ultrasound at Victoria House until 2010. From late 2007 until late 2019, Oriana helped create and co - owned Ultrasound Training Solutions, (now Zedu), an education company teaching point of care ultrasound to physicians of different medical disciplines. She moved back into public hospital radiology as a clinical sonographer from late 2019 until April of 2023, moving from The Northern Hospital, to Eastern Health and finally Monash Health. In April 2023, she embraced the opportunity to join Alfred Health as the Sonographer Educator in the ED and establish a Point of Care program for the Alfred Emergency Department with great enthusiasm. She currently holds this position while keeping her hand in as a clinical sonographer for a private practice.
